The current National Association of Women Artists' annual members' exhibition will close this Saturday (6/21/'25) at 4:00pm. Try to catch it before then: Leonovich Gallery, Sidewalk level, 520 West 24th Street, New York, NY. Gallery hours: Tues - Fri, noon - 6pm & Sat, noon - 4pm.
It is a very large and varied show, with some really strong pieces on view. My contribution is Greenwich Village Midday, acrylic on canvas, 20" x 20" (pictured above). It features the iconic Jefferson Market Library, located on sixth Avenue between 10th and 9th streets. I used a recent photo for the painting, but memory also informed the work, imbuing it with an element of nostalgia. I used to pass by the library on my way to elementary school, high school, later, on my way to NYU; and then, to many meetings, dates and whatnot over the years. Greenwich Village has changed a lot since I lived there. It no longer has the bohemian vibe that attracted so many artists, writers and performers back then in the late fifties, sixties and early seventies. Many of the buildings and businesses are gone too, casualties of gentrification. However, the library still stands, a reminder of those halcyon days.
